Clear aligners and retainers made from Zendura materials stay fresh, clear, and comfortable with simple daily care. The guidance below applies to appliances fabricated from every Zendura material — including Zendura A, FLX, VIVA, TRAK, and AT.
Daily cleaning#
A few seconds of daily care keeps appliances hygienic and looking invisible:
- Rinse immediately. As soon as the appliance comes out of the mouth, rinse it with cool or lukewarm water. This prevents saliva minerals from drying onto the surface as a stubborn white film.
- Wash gently. Clean the appliance with a mild, non-abrasive soap and cool or lukewarm water.
- Brush softly. Use a dedicated soft-bristled toothbrush to gently remove food debris, plaque, and dried saliva — no heavy scrubbing, which can scratch the polyurethane surface.
Disinfecting with an effervescent soak#
While ordinary soap and water can effectively clean and disinfect Zendura appliances, an occasional soak keeps them sparkling and odor-free — particularly important for long-term retainers, which are worn far longer than weekly aligner trays and accumulate more tartar and biofilm over time.
Use an alcohol-free, non-abrasive, effervescent denture or retainer cleanser, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Products compatible with Zendura materials include:
- DentaSOAK® — alcohol-free and non-toxic
- Efferdent®
- Polident®
- Kenite
—or their generic equivalents.
What to avoid#
Polyurethane is a medical-grade engineering material, but it is not enamel. A few common care mistakes can permanently damage an appliance:
- Never use regular toothpaste. Toothpaste contains micro-abrasives designed to polish hard enamel. Those particles scratch the softer appliance surface, leaving micro-grooves that make it look cloudy and harbor odor-causing bacteria.
- Never use hot or boiling water. Zendura materials are thermoplastics — high heat will warp the precise custom fit of the appliance, making it unusable.
- Never use alcohol, bleach, or harsh chemicals. Rubbing alcohol, household bleach, and alcohol-based mouthwashes degrade, weaken, and discolor the polymer structure and can cause cracking.
- Avoid colored dyes. Do not soak appliances in colored mouthwashes or dyed liquids; the dyes can permanently stain the crystal-clear plastic.
- Remove appliances to eat and drink. Take them out before meals and before drinking anything hot, colored, or sugary (coffee, tea, soda, wine). Heat distorts the appliance, and dyes and sugars trapped underneath promote staining and decay.
In the lab and clinic#
For technicians and clinicians fabricating appliances from Zendura sheet materials, the Instructions for Use specify a pre-delivery sanitation step:
Wash the finished Zendura appliance with a mild soap — such as a 2% Liquinox solution — and rinse well with water before delivering it to the patient.
